The Civil War Circle is located in the back of the cemetery by the Prince St. wall. This is dedicated to the memory of nineteen soldiers who gave their lives during the Civil War between 1862 and 1865.
Neighborhood Assistance Act Approved
The Wallingford Center Street Cemetery Association is gratified to announce that Governor Malloy has approved our application for inclusion in the 2015 Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program. This program is designed to provide funding for municipal and tax exempt organizations by providing a corporation business tax credit for businesses that make cash contributions to these entities.
The Center Street Cemetery is the historic resting place of the town’s founders, prominent persons and everyday folks interred here behind the stately stone wall in downtown Wallingford. Burials began here in the 1670’s and continue even today amidst the tall maple and sycamore trees. Work is ongoing to keep up the structural integrity of the gravestones which have been exposed to weather and time. We are fortunate to have a superintendent, Bob Devaney, who dedicates many hours to maintaining the cemetery including restoration of some gravestones; however, many of them require specialized work to preserve the beauty of monuments that may have been hand engraved hundreds of years ago. Our cemetery association budgets monies each year to continue this restoration process but as a non-profit organization we are limited by the amount of funds available.
Inclusion in the NAA allows businesses to sponsor our “Monument Conservation Project” by making a minimum $250 contribution, sixty percent of which may be taken as a credit against their Connecticut tax liability. Please consider financially supporting this project and to participate further in this dedicated endeavor by joining the Center Street Cemetery Association.
Businesses wishing to support our project must submit their applications on form NAA-02 to the Department of Revenue Services between September 15, 2015 and October 1, 2015. This form is available on the internet at http://www.ct.gov/drs/lib/drs/fillable_forms/2015_forms/naa-02_fillable.pdf . This form may then be emailed to NAAProgram@ct.gov or may be mailed or hand-delivered. Fax transmissions will not be accepted. Any tax credit not taken in the year in which it was made may be carried back to the two immediately preceding income years (beginning with the earlier of such years.) ========================================================
On May 4th, 1911, the Center Street Cemetery Association was established "To care for, maintain and beautify the Center Street Cemetery." The rewards of preserving and restoring this historic cemetery are many: personal, educational, historical, and patriotic, for the Center Street Cemetery spans the centuries, from the 17th century into the distant future. We urge you to consider participating in this dedicated endeavor by joining the Center Street Cemetery Association.
